I am still very independent.  Why should I consider moving to Scott Hill?

Scott Hill residents enjoy all the luxuries of home without the concerns of home maintenance or repairs, which can be physically and financially straining.  Living at Scott Hill also gives you the added security of 24-hour emergency response services as well as other amenities and social opportunities.  

 

Is assisted living or nursing care provided at Scott Hill?

Scott Hill is an independent living community for seniors.  We are not a healthcare facility.  There are no nurses or care providers on staff. 

 

What amenities does Scott Hill have?

Amenities include dinner plan options, emergency pull cords in each apartment, on-site laundry facilities, on-site beauty salon and barber shop, and scheduled transportation in our ADA accessible van.  On-call emergency response is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Service Coordinators are available to help residents discover what other community services may be available to them.

 

I own my own home.  Can I still qualify to live at Scott Hill?

You may still qualify to live at Scott Hill.  A small percentage of the cash value of your real estate is taken into consideration when calculating your eligibility income (currently $60 for every $100,000 of assets).

 

I don’t make very much money.  How can I afford rent?

Rent is based on your individual income to make it affordable for everyone.  The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) subsidizes each individual’s rent.  Even someone with no income can afford to live at Scott Hill. 

 

What utilities are covered with the rent?

Water, sewer and trash removal are included in the rent.  Residents pay their own electric bill.  They also pay their own phone, internet, and cable television service if they choose to have them.

 

How can I qualify to live at Scott Hill?

Each applicant goes through a qualification process to live at Scott Hill.  Once an application is received, various criteria is reviewed.  For detailed information on these items, please contact the rental office at 540-862-5741.  Below is a summary of key items that establish eligibility.

  • Income level – Applicants must be at or below the federally established Very Low income level for Alleghany County.  This limit is currently $23,750 for a household of one person and $27,150 for a two-person household (as of 2022; subject to annual change). 
  • Age – Applicant, co-applicant or spouse must be 62 years of age or older OR be applying for a unit specially constructed to be accessible to people with a physical disability.
  • Rental history – A reference will be obtained from landlords over the past 5 years to determine a positive rental history, if you are a renter.  
  • Credit history – A credit report will be reviewed.  
  • Social Security Number – Disclosure of social security number is required.
  • Eligibility Criteria Screening – A criminal records check will be performed on all applicants.  

 

What is the difference between Briarcliffe and Ridgeview?

Scott Hill is made up of two separate HUD subsidized communities—Briarcliffe and Ridgeview.  One difference between the two sections is that Briarcliffe has a required meal plan.  Having the meal program allows Briarcliffe residents a reduced rate for their monthly meals.  The evening meal is served 365 days per year.  Residents in Ridgeview have the option to participate in the meal program.
